Belarusian School Students Win 4 Medals at International Olympiad in Informatics

Belarusian team won four medals at the 28th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). This year, IOI was held in Kazan, Russia. Over 300 school students from 82 countries competed for the awards.

Mikhail Natalevich, a this-year graduate of the BSU Lyceum, and Fedar Karabeinikau, an 11th-grade student of Gomel Gymnasium No.51, won silver medals.

Ilya Medyanikov, a this-year graduate of Vitebsk Gymnasium No.8, and Artur Petukhouski, an 11th-grade student of Vitebsk Gymnasium No.8, won bronze medals.

The team was trained by Irina Kirinovich, a docent of the Human Engineering and Ergonomics Department at the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, and Alexey Tolstikov, a senior lecturer of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the Belarusian State University. Head of the HTP resident-company YandexBel Aleksey Sikorsky acted as an observer from Belarus.

According to Irina Kirinovich, it has become a tradition for Belarusian students to demonstrate great performance at international olympiads in informatics: ”I am overwhelmed with emotions; that is so touching and exciting! Our students show excellent knowledge and prove with their achievements that most talented people live in Belarus. I am especially thankful to the HTP resident-companies Game Stream and YandexBel for their continuing support.“

Game Stream supports young Belarusian computer scientists for several years. The company invites team members to its office where employees share their experience with children, explain that you need to work hard to succeed, encourage them and help to choose a future profession.

YandexBel provides ongoing support in training Belarusian team and organizing its participation in international competitions in computer science.

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is an annual competition for school students. The first IOI was held in Pravets, Bulgaria in 1989. Today, it is one of the most prestigious competitive programming events. One of its goals is to bring together and support exceptionally talented school students from various countries. In 2017, IOI will be held in Tehran, Iran.
