Hackathon in Hi-Tech Park. The possibilities of AI in gamedev

28 April 2024

The finals of the Space Hackathon with Game Stream took place in Hi-Tech Park. The Startup Center of the Belarusian State University, the Hi-Tech Park Supervisory Board Secretariat, the youth entrepreneurial community StartUp Space BSU organized the event with the support of Game Stream.

About 150 participants - students and young scientists of Belarusian universities - registered for the hackathon. The participants were developing a prototype of a tool for generating or processing content for one of the proposed products ("World of Tanks", Tanks Blitz) based on artificial intelligence technologies.

Space Hackathon with Game Stream started at Hi-Tech Park on April 26. During the event, participants were offered an educational block, independent work in teams, and 2 checkpoints.

As a result, 15 teams out of 35 made it to the finals, where they demonstrated their knowledge in practice and presented their solutions to the expert committee.

Most of the finalists worked on the tasks of pattern pomgeneration, 2D to 3D map generation. Almost all teams presented a prototype solution. Some managed to develop their own neural networks. Several solutions that were not included in the terms of reference were also presented.

Opening the final of the event, BSU Vice-Rector Viktor Kochin wished the participants to develop, generate new ideas and be one step ahead of modern technologies. Rustam Starikov, Deputy Director of Game Stream, noted that AI is the future and "our task is not to let it control us, but to learn how to control it".

Summing up the results, Dmitry Mikulko, head of the BSU Startup Center, emphasized that very motivated and talented young people, who want to show what they are capable of, gathered here. All the finalist teams presented themselves at a high level and it was a difficult task to choose the winners.

The winner's diploma of Space Hackathon with Game Stream was awarded to Anton Kosenko's team (students of BSU and BSUIR), having presented a tool for generating 2D references in the game by text query with the subsequent possibility of their translation into 3D for use in the production of game content.

The second place was awarded to the team of Gleb Brodko (students of BNTU, BSU). They presented a development environment containing a toolkit of services for each department of the company, as well as a neural network developed by them to improve communication and optimize the work of the company's departments to set TOR.

The third in the list of the winners was the team of Artem Gradusov (students of BNTU, BSU), who developed a service based on neural networks, which allows generating audio accompaniment on demand, combining audio files, as well as generating game sounds based on audio data.

Sharing his impressions of the competition, Gleb Brodko emphasized, that "Hackathons are one of the coolest platforms for developing entrepreneurial skills and personal qualities. They also give an opportunity to "get a feel" of a company's product from the inside".

In addition, the deputy director of Game Stream noted the youngest participants - Artem Milchenko's team (BSU Law College), who presented a web application based on a neural network, which allows generating a blockout map design. The students were invited to visit the company's office and talk to its experts in various areas of activities.
