YADRO laboratory in BSUIR: results of the first year of work

The Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics (BSUIR) summarizes the interim results of the scientific and educational laboratory, which was opened in cooperation with the Hi-Tech Park resident Engineering Center Yadro.

YADRO-BGUIR laboratory was opened in October 2023 at the Faculty of Computer Systems and Networks, Department of Informatics. The key objective is to train specialists in the field of system-on-chip design and study of digital circuitry, RISC-V based computing architectures, CAD and other languages, as well as FPGA type programmable logic integrated circuits.

In the past academic year, 22 students and master's students of BSUIR became research interns of the YADRO laboratory and worked on individual projects in physical cryptography, control and diagnostics of digital devices, digital signal processing. The best works were presented at scientific and technical conferences and published in scientific journals.

"BSUIR is not a ‘classical’ university, but a scientific and educational center, aimed primarily at solving engineering problems using modern technologies and developments in the current economic conditions. Our key task is to ensure the quality of education, so we are actively expanding cooperation with major IT companies, in particular with YADRO. The opening of the laboratory allowed us to create a platform where our students can acquire practical skills and in the future work on real projects in the field of system-on-chip development, which is at the forefront of modern microelectronics", – emphasized BSUIR Rector Vadim Bogush.

Students of the laboratory also participated in other educational initiatives of the company: Impulse Summer Internship, YADRO SoC Design Challenge Hackathon and Digital Circuit Synthesis School.

"BSUIR is one of the most prestigious and challenging technical universities in Belarus, which is also known for the high level of training of specialists in the field of microelectronics. That is why we decided to open a research and training laboratory in this university, – commented Natalia Ryzhenkova, Director of the Engineering Center Yadro, – The results of the first year of the laboratory confirm the effectiveness of our cooperation. Last academic year 9 students of the laboratory took part in scientific conferences, 4 successfully defended their diploma projects, and 6 people got jobs in our Minsk office". 

For example, Mikhail Kaiky, an alumnus of the lab and now the head of the cryptographic extensions and security team at the Engineering Center Yadro in Minsk, continued to interact with the lab, which resulted in a joint project on the design of a hardware random number source TRNG - True Random Number Generator.

This year BSUIR and YADRO plan to expand the curriculum by adding new courses on microprocessor architectures and digital device design languages.
