BSU Student Team to Participate in The ACM-ICPC World Finals

7 December 2017

The student team of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Belarusian State University will proceed to the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC).

The team consists of first-year students Fedor Korobeinikov and Egor Dubovik, and Master student Konstantin Vilchevsky. The BSU team performed successfully at the regional Northern Eurasia semifinals which were held in Saint Petersburg and Barnaul (Russia), Tbilisi (Georgia), and Tashkent (Uzbekistan) on December 3. This year, the BSU team is the only one from Belarus to participate in the world finals to be hosted by Peking University (Beijing, China) in April.

Ten teams represented Belarus in Saint Petersburg: 5 teams from BSU, 3– BSUIR, 1–Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, and 1– A.Kuleshov Mogilev State University. BSU teams also received three 2nd degree diplomas and a 3rd degree diploma. Each team of three students had one computer and 5 hours to solve 12 problems. Students must develop an algorithm, prove its correctness and optimality, and submit their solutions as programs. Programs are then run on test data. The winner is the team which correctly solves most problems.

Held since 1977, the ACM ICPC is the most important programming competition among student teams. Teams from Belarusian universities have participated in regional contests since 1995. BSU students won gold medals (the Czech Republic, 2004), bronze medals (Canada, 2008), and silver medals (Poland, 2012 and Russia, 2013).
