HTP develops national bone marrow donor registry for the leading Belarusian transplantation center

22 December 2009

EPAM Systems, Inc., the leading software engineering and IT Outsourcing (ITO) provider in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and a resident of the Belarus Hi Tech Park, has announced the release of a bone marrow donor registry application. The solution has been developed to facilitate the marrow donor matching process for the Transplantology and Cell Biotechnology Center operating at the 9th City Clinical Hospital in Minsk, Belarus, at no expense for the Center.

The application functions as a registry database storing genotype data on the potential bone marrow and stem cell donors, as well as the patients who need transplantation. The match is searched based on the donor and patient medical condition relevance. The permission-enabled application, which eliminates unauthorized access to the data, provides complete confidentiality and donor information protection. The release of the application has a nation-wide social significance as the bone marrow transplantation for patients suffering from oncological and hematologic diseases is the only life-saving treatment or, in some cases, a method of obtaining a long-lasting remission and sustainable living.

The Belarusian donor registry is not only compatible with the European analogue, but also makes a valuable extension of it. The world's bone marrow donor registry contains data on about 11 million people, thus making the probability of finding a relevant match close to 76%.

"Now thanks to EPAM we have one of the most up-to-date donor registries in the CIS. Before, the surgeons from Belarus had to query the European donor centers, which used to entail additional expenses and increase the transplantation surgery costs by ten thousand Euro. Besides, the functionality of the application enables us making timely updates to the existing list of the antigens alongside with the latest research data about the human genotype," said A. Ouss, Head of the Republican Transplantology and Cell Biotechnology Center, Deputy Chief Physician on clinical care, M.D., 9th Minsk City Clinical Hospital.
"Since its inception, EPAM has always strongly supported the concept of running socially responsible business. Thus the company actively contributes to various walks of life by taking part in social projects, joining efforts in establishing education centers, offering its employees an attractive compensation package and a comfortable work environment. We are pleased to have been given the opportunity to apply our software engineering knowledge and experience to help people with health problems regain the joy of life," noted Siarhei Dzivin, General Director, EPAM Systems, Belarus.
