Best of the Best or the revolutionary design. Teslasuit Virtual Suit Receives Prestigious Red Dot Award

25 March 2019

Teslasuit received the Red Dot: Best of the Best, the top distinction in the competition. It is granted for ground-breaking design and goes to the best products in a category.

Teslasuit is a full-body haptic suit, that became the world’s’ first interface between a user and digital environment. Teslasuit makes the experience in virtual and augmented reality more realistic and effective through the synergy of systems. The integrated complex of haptics, motion capture, temperature control, and biometry provides improved human performance with Teslasuit. Teslasuit’s haptic technology allows to transmit touch: it is actually an additional channel of communication and a new way of making VR experience deeper, immersive, and more realistic. Electrostimulation based haptics increases immersion, stimulates neural activity, fosters muscle memory, thus improving learning. At present, Teslasuit is intended for integration into a diverse range of enterprise applications and VR training solutions. In the future, Teslasuit will be widely used in games and entertainment, fitness and sports, wellness and healthcare.

«Our goal was to find a balance between comfort and aesthetics, ergonomics and practical implementation possibilities. Some technologies that formed part of Teslasuit existed before, but never in the form a smart clothing solution. Developing smart clothes that provide an interface between a human body and digital world is more challenging than just packing electronics within a rigid gadget. So the important goal, and the biggest complexity, was to make interaction between computers and a human body smooth, comfortable and safe. We were creating a design that would be both functional and minimal in its aesthetics», – said Igor Buturlia, Head of Design at Teslasuit.

«Winning the Red Dot: Best of the Best is a very special honour, because only a very small percentage of entries are granted this distinction. It is well-deserved recognition for a wonderful design achievement and proof that the award-winning companies are amongst the best in design. Consumers can rely on the first-class design quality of the winning products, because they were tested and selected by an experienced jury according to strict assessment criteria», said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, in reference to the winners.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design is one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 2019, designers and manufacturers from 55 countries entered more than 5,500 products in the competition. Only 1.5% of the objects entered won a Red Dot: Best of the Best. The international jury is comprised of experienced experts from different disciplines and has been convening for more than 60 years in order to select the year’s best designs. During an adjudication process that spans several days, they try out the products, discuss them and ultimately reach a well-founded decision regarding the design quality of the entries. True to the motto «In search of good design and innovation», their assessment focuses on criteria such as the level of innovation, functionality, formal quality, longevity, and ergonomics.

On 8 July 2019, Teslasuit will celebrate its success during the award ceremony. As part of the Red Dot Gala, the international design scene will convene and the winners of the Red Dot: Best of the Best will receive their trophies on stage at Essen’s Aalto-Theater. The subsequent Designers’ Night in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen provides an excellent opportunity for networking. In addition, Teslasuit will be added to the «Design on Stage» exhibition during the party, which presents all of the award-winning products. From that date, Teslasuit will also be on show in the Red Dot Design Yearbook, online and in the Red Dot Design App.

«Winning the award is really mind-blowing. It is very prestigious. I am incredibly pleased to see my work recognized. It is always hard on a designer when his work is under-appreciated and misunderstood since many people have their own opinions on aesthetics. So getting my work recognized is extremely encouraging. I’m inspired to create new, even cooler designs», – said Igor Buturlia, Head of Design at Teslasuit.

About Teslasuit

Teslasuit was first officially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2018 where Teslasuit was highlighted as one of the most interesting innovations presented. Authoritative high-tech media outlet Tech Crunch also considered Teslasuit the future of full-body haptic technology. This year, Teslasuit has been named a CES 2019 Innovation Awards Honoree in Virtual and Augmented Reality and Future Unicorn Award winner.
